VibeWest Interview: Erica Jago

I had the honor of interviewing Erica at Wanderlust Oahu. She is a sweet, light hearted, passionate artist and yogini. The book she co-authored with Elena Brower “Art of Attention” has breathtaking photography and a simplicity that is artistically mind blowing. Check out the website artofattention.com. Highly recommended to own! Erica can also be found at jagoyoga.com.

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

The self-study and betterment that comes from living what I teach.

How long have you been practicing yoga?

Since 2002 when I moved to San Francisco after college.

Who do you most admire in your life?

My fierce girlfriends who inspire and give me beautiful visions of what’s possible. My man, for teaching me how to send and receive compassionate communication all day, every day

What book could you not live without?

“What We Ache For” by Oriah Mountain Dreamer

What was on of the most defining moments of your life?

Over coming an 18 year old eating disorder, which lead me to the next big lesson in my life. Boundaries. Learning how to say “No” in a sincere and polite way, without feeling bad.

What’s your favorite “pig out” food?

Pizza! We make a homemade pizza every month and its my favorite time spent with my family.

Do you have a favorite yoga mat?

My red jade mat, extra long, that was gifted to me. Before that I never used a mat!

What gets the most playtime on your iPod?

I use RDIO to share and compile playlists. Right now the “ Atmosphere” playlist is getting the most love.

How would your best friend describe you?

Sweet and soft with a laugh that comes from deep, deep down in my belly 🙂

Can you juggle or hula hoop?

Hula hoop!

Intro or extrovert?

Both. Depends on who I’m spending time with.

Barefoot or shoes?

Living in Hawaii, barefoot. And i love the ritual of washing my feet before bed. Puts me right to sleep.

Mountains or beach?

I thought I was a mountain girl who loved Tahoe until I moved to Hawaii. Now I don’t know how I will ever live away from the ocean.

Coffee, matcha or tea?

If I could have my Parisian way, Marriage Freres teas only. The Bouddha Blue or Vert Provence with rose, lavender green tea.

I’m an instagram only girl and love to share my artwork and creative processes through images. Plus I feel I can stay connected to friends who love far away. I love it!

Do you have a favorite quote?

My dear friend, lechat808 just emailed this to me: “And you will know exactly who you are, forever, by knowing what it is that you love.”- Mark Helprin

If you could teach anywhere in the world, where would it be?

All of my wild dreams are coming true, as I head out to promote my first book, Art of Attention’s 5 translations. I’ll tour through Mexico, Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, France, NYC and Ohio. I want to drastically change the way I teach as an artist and yogini by becoming super honest on how creative processes bring us to our truth.

How many festivals have you attended?

Beloved, Lightening in a Bottle, Pitch, Burning Man, Symbiosis… perhaps more?

What do you love about Wanderlust?

I love the intensity mixed with potent moments of silent savasanas. I love the photography and videos that capture all the smiles and dancing. But mostly I love connecting with great teachers like Suzanne Sterling and Seane Corn because we all need great role models and visions of hope in our lives.

You have created such a beautiful book, is art and expression part of your dharma?

Yes, this is my dharma because I heard my intuition tell me exactly that many times in mediation. It said “you should do a book” and to be honest, the reason why I’m so aligned with my passions is because I have creative processes that keep me connected to what’s real. If I had one wish, it would be that each individual realizes, believes and honors their own unique creative visions. I say this because it’s my art and expression that lead me to my own personal healing.

Any big plans for this year that you would like to share or promote??

Retreats are where I want to focus my caregiving and creativity because I have seen the most profound transformations in people once they set themselves free from obligations.
